ma 間

often translated as interval or void, the japanese term ma refers not to absence but to the meaningful space between things - a relational field where space and time gain significance. in a school, the interval becomes a fertile ground for spontaneous, social, and lived learning, fostering autonomy, empathy, and creativity. the new lumiar secondary school proposes to design the void - dispersed volumes are arranged within an open garden, creating interstitial spaces that connect nature and architecture. the school emerges as a permeable “garden-school” where the void shapes the learning experience.
